It’s the weirdest thing. Can’t smell smoke, but the light’s gone all dim and yellow, the birds have shut up and the cats are clingy. And we’re TWO THOUSAND MILES AWAY!!
I pity the poor bastards in the thick of it.
Edit: at least the sun’s come out. Kinda...

It’s f**kd mate. I was in aircon operating all day yesterday so didn’t get to experience the the hottest temp in the world at Penrith (peaked at 47.9). But this greeted me as I left work .. Look at the time.

Screw that for a joke. Dry heat is at least more tolerable than humid, but anything above low 30s is no fun.

Still, the embattled punters are at least getting some light entertainment out of abusing the PM wherever he goes.

We in California started getting bad wildfire summers starting in about 2008. I remember seeing it for the first time like that - so apocalyptic. This will get worse before it gets better.

Respect works both ways and our Prime Minister is learning this lesson at the moment. Unfortunately, it is unclear whether it's sinking in as yet. And yet we have no shortage of enthusiastic and motivated educators...

Major-league bushfires have been a routine thing in Australia since time immemorial, to the point where some of the flora has evolved to require it. Loss of life and large-scale infrastructure destruction isn’t “routine” but it’s happened every so often as long as I can remember. What’s unusual this year is that so many large fires have started simultaneously across the country, and that it’s got so big so early - the “bushfire season” in Oz has only just got started, it’s got months to run. To put it in perspective, the state of Victoria alone has lost around 20% more land so far this season than California did in total last summer, and Australia as a whole around 10x.
